Hit the Bestseller's List!

At 4:00 pm today, Ignited slipped into Amazon Kindle's Bestselling List for Teen e-books at #94. Officially, a bestseller! Yippee! I'm beyond giddy! Can't you tell?

Reviews

"This book has it all...romance, suspense, action, a touch of the paranormal. The characters are so well written that one almost forgets they are not real. The plot flows perfectly, slowing and picking up pace at just the right moments. I have not found a dull moment so far." - L. Lombard, author of EBO

"You had me sitting on the edge of my seat the entire time. Your action scenes are very well written and have kept me hanging on every word! I can see it becoming one of those hugely popular young adult novels."- Sarah Faye, author of Sapphire

"This is a bit of a page turner! The whole thing is well written and the plot moves on at a great pace, which really kept me interested." - Pippa Whitethorn, author of Shuffle

"The Greek Mythology element is believable and well-constructed, and the tension created between each chapter just makes you want to read on." - Jacoba Dorothy, author of Cold Grey

"The characters are realistic and well defined. The suspense scenes thrilled and terrified me. I love the paranormal premise. It's original and relatable, as is the rest of your fictional world." - Laura Emmons, author of Seeing Magic

"It pulled me in immediately. It's really vivid." - Josephine O'Brien, author of Shared Skies

Got this on repeat as I write the sequel to Ignited. No, I'm not trying to hint at something about a car accident ;)  It's just the duet part and the words "I can't live without ya, baby" that make me think
about my characters. Plus, well, it's a good song!

As Promised: Excerpt of Ignited

After lunch, he suggested a lesson in hand-to-hand combat and that was when things got interesting.
I shouldn’t have been excited about it, considering he was about to hand my ass to me without breaking a sweat. I had a moment of trepidation when we reached a flat area in the field Nathan declared a suitable location. That anxiety vanished when he removed his sweatshirt and tossed it to the ground. Luckily, his back was to me, and he didn’t catch my eyes bugging out of my head.
The black torn sleeveless t-shirt he had on underneath revealed the sculpted biceps he’d been hiding all along, and the sides of the shirt scooped low enough that I glimpsed a smooth ripped chest when he turned. I was acutely aware that this was the first time I was seeing so much of him. It was nice, really nice.
His upper left arm was marked with a tattoo I couldn’t make out from the distance. Other than that, his skin was unmarked and flawless. Lean and smooth muscles blended and moved together like a marvelous piece of well-oiled machinery.
I’d bet he had one hell of a six pack.
“You change your mind?”
“Huh?” It took me a moment to realize he had been talking to me as I was ogling him. That was what, the third time he’s busted me now?
“I asked if you were ready,” he said slowly, like I was an idiot, which he probably thought I was by now.
“Yeah,” I said quickly. “Let’s go.” I swung my arms and clasped them in front of me with a sharp nod of my head.
“Alright, then.” He took a wide stance, crossing his arms in front of him and, God help me, all I could think about was how sexy he looked. “What do you do if someone attacks you?”
It didn’t help my case that I hadn’t been prepared for a quiz first, and stared at him dumbly.
He tilted is head. “Take your time, Kris.”
“Shut up.” I could do this. I jutted my chin out at him. “Man or woman?”
He hesitated, clearly wondering where I was going with this. “Man.”
That was easy. “Kick him in his happy place.”
His lips twitched and I caught a brief twinkle in his eyes. It took visible effort, but he managed to keep a straight face—something he seemed to have a hard time doing around me lately. He considered my answer and nodded objectively. “Good tactic, and probably effective, but I think we’ll skip over practicing that one, if it’s okay with you.”
“Sure thing, coach,” I snickered.
“Plan B?”
I shrugged. “Run?”
He made a face. “How far do you think you would get before I caught you?”
From him? Not far. He knew that. He knew that I knew that. But honestly, what were my alternatives? He towered over me by nearly a foot and had eighty pounds on me. He was bigger, faster, and stronger. He was a trained part-god. I couldn't possibly compete with him.
I huffed. “You can’t expect me to stay and fight you. I’ve seen what you’re capable of. No thanks,” I said defensively. “Plus, look at you, look at me. It’s hardly a fair fight.”
“Exactly,” he exclaimed like I’d said something brilliant. “There are ways to use your opponent’s size and strength against them, so that when you do run, you get away, and maybe they think twice about following.”
If it worked, he would be in serious trouble. “Okay, Sensei, and how do I do that?”
He spent the next half hour going over technique and demonstrating a few maneuvers to incapacitate an opponent of any size. By the time he offered for me to try a few moves on him, I was giddy with excitement.
“Aren’t you afraid I’ll hurt you?” I teased.
He didn’t even hesitate. “No.”
I scoffed. “You just taught me how to hurt you. Isn’t that an insult to your teaching skills?”
“It’s an insult to your ability to use what you’ve learned,” he returned quickly, and then relented some with an easy shrug. “It is your first time trying.”
I would have been infuriated if it had come from anyone else. Coming from him, it sounded…right. Plus, from the smirk on his face, I knew he was teasing me. So Nathan wants to play? Game on. For dramatic effect, I stretched my arms behind me and tilted my head from side to side.
Nathan watched me, and waited. “Let me know when you’re ready,” he said casually.
I put my hands on my hips and narrowed my eyes at him. “Ready.”
I really was not ready when he lunged at me, and that was my excuse when I failed miserably and ended up restrained in his arms. And that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.
He let me try over and over, and I failed each time. Finally, out of breath after five minutes, I stopped him. “What am I doing wrong?”
“Nothing. You just need more practice. You can’t expect to be good at it the first time you try.”
“You’re really fast,” I panted, clutching my side.
“You’ll get faster too.”
“You have an advantage right now,” I reminded him. “Just wait. I’m going to surprise you one of these days.”
He didn’t look convinced. That only made me more determined. Somewhere along the way, I had come to seek his approval, and dammit, I was going to get it.

IGNITED

Ignited is a young adult paranormal romance novel.

Seventeen year old Kris Young is on the run from a throng of superhuman golden-eyed freaks hell-bent on seeing her dead, and she doesn't know why. Good thing she has her guardian angel to protect her...sort of.

Kris is aided by Nathan, the mysterious man that ends up being anything but angelic when he rescues her for the fourth time in fourteen years. Even if the handsome hero illusion is shattered by his harsh treatment of her, he knows how to fight this strange enemy and is determined to keep her safe at all costs.

As the body count rises in their wake, Nathan introduces Kris to a world in which not everyone is human and the battle lines between good and evil are clearly drawn. Kris's piece in the puzzle is something neither is aware of and, as they uncover the truth, neither is prepared for what they find. Overcoming twists and revelations that shatter both of their lives, they discover that nothing is as it seems and nothing, least of all their hearts, are safe.

From debut author, Desni Dantone, Ignited is the first novel in a tale of first love, mystery and adventure that will introduce you to an exciting new world as Kris discovers how she fits in it.

Back to Work

I was close...so close...to putting the finishing touches on my manuscript and query letter and submitting to agents, and then my life was turned upside down by the sudden and unexpected loss of my mother to a massive heart attack.
It was difficult to focus, to finish, to WANT to finish...but then I realized that she would have wanted me to. It was slow going at first...my mind would wander and I would lose focus...but I think I have officially finished it.
I think I will put it up for a week or so, read through it again, especially the last little bit that I just wrote, and then...the moment I have been waiting for: SUBMISSION!
I have been getting some really good feedback on Authonomy. People really seem to like my book and have been asking if it is being published because they would be interested in buying it. Now, THAT is motivation! That's one big kick in the ass to get this done! People want to buy my book?
Okay, now I have to put it out there for them. So, let's do this!
I'm officially back.
This one's for you mom.

Authonomy Reviews on Ignited

Getting some awesome reviews on Ignited! Loving it! Loving that my readers are loving it!

YAPR/ YARG review
This is bloomin good! It's polished writing with well written characters. Now, this review is going to sound a little wishy washy because after reading four chapters I have hardly any notes! I love the line in chapter 2 - "He was the type of guy that could take a small hit to his ego. It wasn't going to go anywhere". Kris' voice is strong and consistent throughout the work and your dialogue runs smooth and works well.
Sorry for the really rubbish review but I couldn't find anything to pick up on!
Love it and I would certainly buy it if it were available.
High stars from me
Nik

YARG Review
I have one word, or sound... aw... where is the rest of the story, please tell me you've finished writing this and you are intending to upload more. I read all twenty chapters in one sitting, its very compelling reading and hooks you right in.
I loved Nathan's character and the relationship you build up between Kris and him, so well done.
The greek mythology element is believable and well constructed, and the tension you create between each chapter just makes you want to read on.
You cleverly leave the last line of each chapter as a cliff hanger, which is skilfully done.
As always with any review I start taking notes, but I'm sorry I gave up with this one, as I liked the story too much to put on an editors hat. So I have a few notes for the first chapter, and there probably could be some more polishing with subsequent chapters, but the story is great, and hey that's what sells. I think the YA audience would eat this up, its got all the essential elelments needed in this genre.
Please, please let me know if you upload anymore. Or if you publish it, I'd definitely buy a copy.
Congrats on writing such a fab story and best of luck with it.
Jxx

7 Deadly Sins

The 7 Deadly Sins of Self-Editing

Categories: The Writer's Dig Tags: Brian Klems, online editor blog.
by Janice Gable Bashman & Kathryn Craft

1. Greed

Many authors damn their efforts from the start with a premature focus on snagging a lucrative book deal. They submit to agents or self-publish before their work is truly ready. But building a career requires that you lay a strong foundation of only your best work—and nobody’s first draft is the best it can be. Careful editing is the mortar that holds the story bricks together.

Penance: Resist the temptation to convince yourself your first draft is “good enough.” If you find yourself rushing your editing process just to leap ahead to pursuing publication, look for deeper motivation to sustain you. Remember that the revision process doesn’t have to be any less enjoyable than the writing itself: You’ll be setting out to find the magic in each word, sentence, paragraph. You’ll be tapping your creative soul for ways to add tension to every page, to find clever solutions to tough story problems. Greed looks toward the uncertain rewards of tomorrow. The joys of writing are available to you today.

2. Lust

Just as dangerous as the temptation to call your first draft “finished” can be the tendency to jump into a revision right away. Words and ideas flood your mind; emotions pump through your heart. But that mad creative rush can become excessive, harming your ability to clearly assess your writing.

Penance: Step away from your current project as long as you can bear it—then wait an additional week. You’ll need that emotional distance before you revisit your work.

3. Gluttony

A great novel is like a gourmet meal. It must be prepared carefully, and to specification, with complementary flavors and courses.
Getting carried away and stuffing in all the good ideas and beautiful word pairings you’ve got in your pantry can lead to overindulgence.

Penance: Put your manuscript on a diet. Pare down or eliminate scenes that don’t further the story. Examine plot points, characters, description, dialogue and exposition, until you have precisely what you need to tell your story, and not a character or subplot more. Then apply this same philosophy to your work at the sentence level, killing your darlings and eliminating excessive adjectives and adverbs, along with verbose descriptions. Bring out the flavor of both your story and your style, but stop short of overseasoning.

4. Pride

Even in the current age of publishing, where aspiring authors can and must act as their own publicists and webmasters and take on myriad other roles, editing is one thing you can’t complete alone. As a form of communication, writing needs an audience. Thinking you don’t need feedback from others isn’t just pride—it’s pride that can squelch your potential.

Penance: Seek the help of beta readers, critique groups and editors. In return for the valuable feedback you receive, share your growing skills by critiquing the works of other participants in return. Then take your humble approach a step further and volunteer at writing conferences, libraries or literacy programs. Start a neighborhood book club, a regional networking group or a listserv for writers. Read widely and blog about it. The more you support the literary community, the more likely it will support you.

5. Sloth

The lazy scribe is one who’s failed to develop and utilize all her natural talents. To draft a story—and then stop there—is to ignore the very nature of literature, which constructs meaning through the deft layering of craft elements. If you find yourself bucking that notion, you may be guilty of sloth.

Penance: Just like with physical exercise, whipping your talent into shape takes time and dedication. You don’t jog once a year and end up with a perfect body. So it goes with your manuscript. To build the endurance skills you’ll need for marathon writing and revision, you must continuously train: Do writing prompts. Do writing exercises. Keep your writing muscles toned through daily practice, and when you review your previous work, your mistakes and weak sections will become more apparent, you’ll be more capable of dealing with them, and you’ll be far less likely to walk away.

6. Envy

Creative people are notoriously insecure. You may covet one published author’s self-confident voice, or another’s way with words. Maybe it’s his humor, or her emotional honesty. If you fear your work pales in comparison, remember that those authors didn’t strike it big by mimicking others or wallowing in jealousy.

Penance: With a friend or writing group, analyze your draft for what is uniquely you. Is it your voice? Your descriptions? Your quirky observations about the world around you? Edit your manuscript again, with an eye for drawing that element out on every page. Editors and agents don’t want another x, y or z. They want what you have that nobody else does. So don’t hold yourself to an impossible standard by trying to be one of your peers.

7. Wrath

The editing process can inspire uncontrolled feelings of rage in a writer. It’s difficult to discover or to hear from a trusted reader that you might not yet have fully developed your work—but it’s also an important step in growing your organic talent.

Penance: Wrath will only get in the way. Ignore feedback at your own peril: What angers us most holds a nugget of truth. Find it. Listen for the gifts within the criticism offered, and use them to help inspire new ideas. Your manuscript can only improve as a result.

A Day in the Life of a Querier

About to find out what it's like in... A Day In the Life of a Querier

8:00 a.m. You’re raring to go. You check and re-check your query letter.
8:30 a.m. You look over your list of agents to query and choose one. You double-check their guidelines and press send. You feel pretty darn good about yourself. You are confident she’ll love it.
10:00 a.m. By now you’ve sent off queries to your top dream agents. You feel proud of yourself.

Guest column by Christina Lee, who is
currently querying for her YA novel. She writes
her own column for The Sun News and creates
hand-stamped jewelry for her on-line jewelry
business, Tags-n-Stones.
She blogs all about

it on www.write-brained.com.

10:30 a.m. You complete a blog post that says something like “Querying agents isn’t so scary after all!”

10:45 a.m. You receive your first form rejection. Basically, it says something along the lines of “While your work shows merit, I was not as drawn to it as I needed to be. I’m sure another agent will feel differently.” You feel humbled. A shroud of doubt slowly descends upon you. You reconsider your list of dream agents and wonder if  what you thought was a match made in publishing heaven, may have all been one-sided. It’s not you, it’s me …
11:00 a.m. – noon. You mope around some more, and then change your blog post to include the title, “Querying Messes with Your Head.” You re-read your first ten pages, and question whether you novel is good enough. You decide not to query anymore until you see other responses from agents.
12:30 p.m. You eat gobs of chocolate for lunch and get hopped up on caffeine.
12:45 p.m. You spy another query response in your inbox, and spend an entire minute staring at it before finally taking the plunge. You cringe while reading it and brace yourself for the worst. You receive your first request for a partial and fist pump the air.
1:30 p.m. You read and re-read your partial before hitting send, afraid to make any kind of mistake. You get a second wind to work on other things, like your newest novel.
2:00 p.m. You take a break and stalk the agent who asked for the partial on Twitter. You read what they had for lunch and note that you like Chipotle, too. You participate in Twitter conversations with other authors and marvel at the support of the community. Hearing their publishing successes doesn’t make you nearly as green with envy today.
3:00 p.m. You receive another rejection. You focus in on the personalized line that reads “…your writing in the pages below was good, but…”  You feel better about this one because the agent made the point to tell you your writing was decent. Which means you must not totally suck.
4:30 p.m. You receive a request for a full in your inbox. Feeling light as air, you dance around the room, considering the endless possibilities of your publishing career.
5:30 p.m. You spend time combing through your entire manuscript making sure you didn’t miss any glaring typos.
6:00 p.m. You re-read the e-mail requesting the full and freak out some more.
6:10 p.m. You finally hit send and then cross your fingers and toes.
6:15 p.m. Before closing out your manuscript, you notice that a typo (that was not there five minutes ago) magically appeared on a page. You curse yourself for not noticing.
6:30 p.m. You spend family time preoccupied by that one typo and wonder what else you missed. You pray the agent is human, too.
7 p.m. – 10 p.m. You hit refresh in your e-mail in-box about one zillion times.
11:00 p.m. You fall into bed, exhausted from all of the effort your brain has exerted.
8:00 a.m. the following day. You look in the mirror and notice something brand new. You’re developing a thicker skin!

Nothing New Right Now...

I know it's been too long...
I haven't fallen off the face of the earth. Something worse.
My almost three-year-old-enough-to-be-sleeping-through-the-night son is boycotting sleep... AGAIN. This mama is tired folks. Somehow I did find time to finish The Indigo Spell by my one of my faves, Richelle Mead. Cuddos Ms Mead! I officially cannot wait for the next one!
I've separated my manuscript into chapters... it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be actually. Still tweaking my query letter and synopsis. Almost have that synopsis down to one tight page... never thought it would be possible! Haven't sent out a query yet... not really something I want to do in my current dazed and confused sleep deprived state. I doubt agents would justify the many typos I would overlook because my kid forgot how to sleep. So, I'll wait and do some more fine-tuning and hopefully not screw something up in the process.
I will be back!
Hopefully sooner than later!

Review

Vampire Academy to be a movie? Best morning ever!

Exciting morning! After so many forevers ago, when I first read the Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead, set the book down with a satisfied smile on my face, and told my husband, "They soooo need to make this one a movie. It's that good", they have done it. Vampire Academy is going to be a movie. Filming starts this summer and this is one I cannot wait to see. This might be the first time I go to a midnight opening... and not even Twilight managed to drag me out of my house at that un-godly hour!

Richelle Mead is one of my idols. I love her books, her style, her voice, her characters... and I finally get to see the best series I've ever read come to life on the big screen. Can't wait! If you're a fan of Twilight, go read this. It's better! If you're a fan of paranormal romance, go read this! If you like to laugh along with the characters in a book, go read this! Rose will have you rolling on the ground laughing.

Check this out!

ALMOST THERE!

Oh, boy did I have a busy weekend. Productive busy weekend. I finished a synopsis - completely different one from the first one I started - and the heart of my query. I think I'll spend the next week researching which agents I'm going to send to while I let the synopsis and query sit, then go back and edit. If all goes well, I might submit my first query in another week or two.

Holy crap is that exciting! Finally! All the blood, tears, and sweat... okay, not blood... is finally paying off.

LOVED! Except... I felt a little let down at the end regarding the love triangle. I needed a little bit more closure on that (I don't want to say too much to spoil it.) I'm hoping for maybe a novella or a spin off...

OVERWHELMED!

Today is the day to be overwhelmed.
How to do it all? How to have time to do it all? Toddler... new puppy, both potty training... synopsis, queries, writing contests... agent searching... editing, editing, editing. Throw in the fact that I'm at my day job 9 hours a day, cutting into the time I have to do all this, and it feels like I'm never going to get to the point that I can say "I'm ready to start submitting!"

All I want is to have my work out there...
Sometimes I just want to cry.

Now seventeen and no longer a believer of angels, she is saved by him yet again and is left with more questions than answers. Who is he? What does he want with her? And...
